Russia Pledges Continued Support to Nigeria
Zakharova emphasized that Moscow’s position on the matter remains "unchanged," highlighting terrorism as a global menace and reaffirming Russia’s commitment to provide support in collaboration with international organizations, the United Nations, and the African Union.
In her statement, Zakharova remarked, “Russia is prepared to continue providing the necessary assistance to its Nigerian partners,” noting that Nigeria’s military and law enforcement agencies have “accumulated significant experience in effectively countering terrorist threats.”
She also emphasized that the civilian population, particularly women and children, continue to bear the brunt of the violence, along with government and security forces who are also targeted in attacks.
Nigeria has been grappling with persistent violence from various armed groups, notably Boko Haram, which has been operating since 2002 out of Borno State.
Despite significant losses inflicted on the group by the Nigerian military in 2015, Boko Haram remains active and continues to pose a serious security threat.
Recent waves of violence have prompted authorities to shut down schools in several regions, while President Bola Tinubu had to cancel a planned visit to South Africa for the G20 summit due to heightened security concerns.
