Nigerian Army Says It Foils Attack Terrorists in Northeast

(MENAFN) The Nigerian army reported that it successfully repelled an early Wednesday attack by suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP militants in the northeastern state of Borno, eliminating more than 60 fighters, including individuals identified as senior members of the group.

According to the army, the coordinated assault took place around 12:50 a.m. local time (2350 GMT Tuesday) in Mallam Fatori and was intended to breach the defensive position of the 68 Battalion. The information was shared via a statement posted on social media.

The militants, who advanced from the Duguri area, were reportedly supported by multiple armed drones during the operation.

As the remaining attackers withdrew toward Arege, Nigerian forces initiated a pursuit operation with the assistance of surveillance systems to track the retreating fighters and prevent them from regrouping.

This incident follows a recent surge in violence attributed to suspected Boko Haram militants, which earlier resulted in at least 23 deaths and more than 100 injuries in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state.

Nigeria has faced prolonged security challenges due to attacks by armed groups, including Boko Haram and its offshoot ISWAP, operating in different parts of the country.

In response, authorities have implemented various countermeasures, including military deployments and cooperation with international partners such as the United States for intelligence sharing and technical assistance.
