Deadly Attacks in Northeast Nigeria Leave Twenty Dead
The attacks are part of a continuing pattern of insecurity affecting the region. Earlier in the month, the United States issued a warning advising its citizens to avoid travel to Nigeria due to rising safety concerns.
Officials said armed men on motorbikes carried out raids on the villages of Pubagu in Borno State and Mayo-Ladde in neighboring Adamawa State, firing on residents and overwhelming local vigilante groups.
According to a statement from a local government official, 11 people, including four vigilantes, were killed in Pubagu, while two others were injured. The attackers also burned a church and multiple homes and properties in the area. In Mayo-Ladde, nine additional fatalities were reported.
“Pubagu is one of the locations in our council area that had never suffered such an attack until yesterday,” Mada said after the burial of the victims on Wednesday, according to reports.
Although no group has formally claimed responsibility, local residents believe the attackers were linked to Boko Haram. The group, along with its offshoot Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), has been engaged in an insurgency in northeastern Nigeria since 2009 and is known for launching rapid assaults on remote communities using motorbikes.
