Nigeria, US Launch Joint Strike Against Islamic State Fighters
(MENAFN) A coordinated military operation involving forces from Nigeria and the United States has reportedly killed at least 175 militants linked to Islamic State in northeastern Nigeria, including several senior commanders.
Nigerian military officials said Tuesday that the campaign targeted fighters from Islamic State West Africa Province across multiple locations over several days. According to authorities, the strikes destroyed weapons supplies, checkpoints, and financial infrastructure used by the group.
US Africa Command confirmed the operation and stated that neither American nor Nigerian personnel were injured during the missions.
“The removal of these terrorists diminishes the group’s capacity to plan attacks that threaten the safety and security of the U.S. and our partners,” AFRICOM said in a statement.
Nigerian military spokesman Samaila Uba said one of the senior ISWAP figures killed was Abd-al Wahhab, whom he described as being responsible for “coordinating attacks and distributing propaganda.”
According to Uba, other militants killed included Abu Musa al-Mangawi and Abu al-Muthanna al-Muhajir, identified as a leading member of the group’s media operations.
The latest operation follows another joint mission announced days earlier by Abuja and Washington in the Lake Chad Basin region. That operation reportedly killed senior Islamic State commander Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, whom President Donald Trump described as the organization’s second-highest-ranking global leader.
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu said the mission demonstrated “effective collaboration” between Nigeria and the US in combating terrorism.
Northeastern Nigeria has faced years of violence linked to Boko Haram and ISWAP, with attacks targeting military positions, civilians, schools, and transportation networks.
The country has also experienced increasing kidnappings and deadly assaults in recent months despite heightened security operations and emergency measures imposed by the government.
