AH-1Z Viper Production Underway for Nigeria, Accelerating International Strike Capabilities and Counterterrorism Outcomes

Production of the first AH-1Z Viper attack helicopter for the Nigerian Air Force is officially underway, marking a critical step in a Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program designed to deliver a decisive warfighting advantage to an international partner.

Facilitated by the USMC Light/Attack Helicopters Program Office (PMA-276) and industry partner Bell Textron Inc., the kickoff of airframe assembly in Amarillo, Texas, directly advances the deployment of expeditionary capabilities. The delivery of 12 AH-1Z Vipers will provide the Nigerian armed forces with unmatched multi-mission flexibility, maximizing lethality against modern threats while minimizing logistical footprints in forward operating areas.

The AH-1Z Viper delivers critical targeting and strike capabilities that function as a continuous deterrent and operational asset for partner nations. To ensure seamless integration and sustained readiness, the Department of War FMS contract tasks Bell with the manufacture of the 12 aircraft, while PMA-276 will drive the associated engineering, program management, and long-term logistics support. This comprehensive sustainment strategy guarantees uninterrupted material availability and strike fighter readiness from the moment the first skids touch the ground.

A recent beam-signing event at the Texas production facility commemorated the manufacturing start, bringing together representatives from the Nigerian Air Force, PMA-276, and Bell.

Production of the AH-1Z helicopter fleet is projected to be completed in early 2029, reinforcing the ongoing integration of allied forces under a unified operational framework to protect mutual security interests.
